Until a couple of years ago, when I found a podcast ‘Let’s talk about myths baby’ that reignited my love for it all. And because of this, I wanted to share with you the best Greek mythology books. But, before we dig into the great stuff and all these best greek mythology books’ suggestions, let’s define what is mythology and see what Greek myths are all about.
What is mythology?
From the Greek ‘MYTHOS’ story of the people and ‘LOGOS’ word or speech. So mythology is defined as the spoken story of the people. Mythology is the study and analysis of the tales and fables of a culture. A collection of stories that deal with different aspects of human conditions and suffering, as well as celestial stories.
Myths express the values and beliefs of a certain culture. It tells the stories of ancestors and about the origins of the world and humans. As well as describing the origin of natural events. (World History)
Greek Mythology is then the collection of stories about the greek gods, heroes and rituals of ancient Greece. Even if viewed as true accounts, as stated by Plato already in the 4th century, they also contained plenty of fictional elements.

PIN THE BEST GREEK MYTHOLOGY BOOKS LIST FOR LATER!

Agreed! I’ve always been fascinated by Greek mythology and the stories behind the gods and goddesses. I recently read ‘The Trojan War: A New History’ by Sarah Bradford and found it to be incredibly insightful. Have you read any of these books? Any recommended additions to the list?
So glad you liked the list! I never read anything from Sarah Bradford but adding it to my list! There have been a lot more retellings in the last few years, like Atlanta by Jennifer Saint and one about Pshyche and Eros, but can’t remember the author. I have been rereading a lot lately, so I am not much up to date 🙂
Wow, what an extensive list! I’ve heard so much praise for Circe and Song of Achilles so I can’t wait to read them this month 🙂

As much as I love Greek mythology, I haven’t read many books about it. There are a lot of great-sounding books here that I will need to check out. I’ve had The Song of Achilles on my TBR for a while now, so this is a good reminder that I need to read that one soon.
Hope you will get some time to read some and The song of Achilles too! Thank you for reading x
I’ve read most of the modern retellings you’ve mentioned and I’m slowly mustering the courage to read the classics, though I’ve tried before and they are tricky😅 so I definitely wouldn’t recommend those to start with, but the modern retellings or PJO instead
I think it’s more of a study than reading itself, but they are totally worth it! Thank you for reading x

I must admit, I’ve never read any Greek mythology books, at least not that I can recall. I know my dad has enjoyed odd ones in the past so I wouldn’t mind picking up some of these for him, and maybe check them out myself afterwards. I’ve seen Percy Jackson around quite a bit but never even knew what it was about so that’ll have to go on my TBR out of sheer curiosity! Fab list 🙂

Oh wow there are SO MANY recs here! I love how vast your recs are. I’d recommend Drag Me Up by R. M. Virtues and that entire Gods of Hunger series because it’s too good.
My boyfriend listened to Mythos and absolutely loved it and has suggested that I borrow his Audible account to listen. After reading this, I know I definitely will!

Oh, it’s amazing and audible even more, Fry has very catchy writing as well as reading! Hope you get to discover more and like it! Thank you for reading x
As I am from Greece I do love Greek mythology. Most of it we studied it at school. Some of them in ancient Greek which was a hard one. I was not aware of most of the books you suggest here but I will have a look at them. What made me feel dissapointed in the past was that most of the new publications had lots of additional fiction included which in many cases was a bit disturbing to me. Anyway, thank you for sharing your passion on our mythology 🙂
That’s so cool! I can only imagine how difficult it must have been in ancient Greek, but it sounds so interesting! I get what you mean! Thank you for reading x
I’m a BIG mythology geek! Doesn’t matter what mythology or time period, I’m there! I’m particularly a big Norse fan but Greek is a close second (hence the nickname Nyx).
I really need to read about Norse mythology! And never thought about the nickname, that’s so cool! Thank you for reading x
I really enjoyed the layout and content of this post. I have an overview of mythology after reading a few of Joseph Campbell’s books, but I’m curious to get back to some classics. I loved the photos too! Thanks for sharing!
Checking Campbell’s books now! Thank you for reading x
It sounds like you’ve got a lot of great recommendations here (I’ve just tabbed a few myself!) I read Sophocles Antigone as part of a Uni course some years ago, I do find mythology interesting though.
Hope you can find some you like Victoria! Thank you for reading x
Great post! This is such a wonderful collection of books! I love greek mythology based novels as well as retellings, I actually took a classical mythology elective during my undergrad even though it had absolutely nothing to do with my major. I’ve read a quite a few of these, but I’ve never heard of so many on this list, so I’m definitely bookmarking the post to come back to once I’ve finished my current greek mythology read, which is Aeschylus’ Oresteia. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, that sounds like a dream to me! I would have really loved to have a chance to study more about mythology in school! Adding Oresteia to my list too and hope you can find some you like! Thank you for reading x
Wow this is so cool. Love to read about Greek mythology. I will add the list to check out later. Thank you for sharing!
Hope you get to find some you like! Thank you for reading x
Growing up, I was so obsessed with Greek mythology that I literally took an entire semester of it as my history elective during my senior year of high school! When these stories made a resurgence with Percy Jackson, I was so excited. I never finished that series (though I hope to now in prep for the upcoming Disney+ show) but I loved the concept. However, as an adult, I’ve found it harder to enjoy the books recommended. I was disappointed by Madeline Miller’s books, which are soooo hyped it’s unreal – and after that, I found it harder to discover new books to really enjoy in this genre. However, you listed some lesser-known titles (to me) here, so I’d like to check those out and see if I can revive my old love for Greek mythology!
That sounds totally my dream, I wish our school was set to let you decide what to pick! I must admittedly say that I never read it, so have to add it to my list! I really liked Miller’s, but can understand your point. I think Fry’s ones might be more entertaining, mostly in audiobooks! Thank you for reading Stephanie and hope you find some you like x
Wow, what a great list! I’ve always been interested in Greek Mythology, but I’ve never actually read a fictional retelling before.
Oh, I love them, hope you find one you like! Thank you for reading x

Wonderful list Cristina! I read The Iliad and The Odyssey at school and got totally hooked on Greek Mythology. The Greek Myths by Robert Graves is an excellent book. My husband and I regularly do crosswords and I am amazed how often there is a random clue linked to Greek Mythology – he always looks at me in amazement when I come up with the answer.
I am so glad you loved it! I know, they use them a lot and it’s always great to find the right word! Thank you for reading x

Ever since I read the Percy Jackson books when I was younger I’ve adored Greek mythology stories – I was lucky enough to actually study Greek classics in my primary school too (it was an unusual choice). I don’t know that I could ever delve into the original texts, they might be a little heavy, but I love modern adaptations of these fantastic stories
I must admit I haven’t read Percy Jackson yet! That was a great opportunity to study in primary school, thank you so much for reading Tom x

I took a greek/roman mythology course in college so I’ve read the classics, but I enjoyed the class!
I want to read some of the retellings now especially the ones that focus on the women’s perspective
Oh envy, would have loved to have a full course on it! I really recommend them, mostly Circe, one of my favourites! Thank you for reading Karalee x
Ooo I’ve read Madeline Miller’s books!!! But will deffo check out the rest! Thank you so much for sharing!
Absolutely love her writing, still waiting for something new! Thank you so much for reading x
I love mythology and folklore. I haven’t read some of these, so they’ll definitely go on my TBR list. Have you read Lore Olympus? It’s a comic with sort of a modern twist on Hades and Persephone, but it touches on other Greek myths as well.
I haven’t read Lore Olympus so adding it now to my TBR! Love to share recommendations, thank you so much for reading Irene x
I honestly don’t know too much about greek myths but this was an interesting article as I feel like I learned quite a bit even just from the excerpts you provided – you’ve given a very thorough list of reading options which is awesome. Thanks for sharing this post!
I am glad you enjoyed and learned something new from it, Alex! Hope you get to read some of them, Thank you so much for reading x
Greek Mythology is one of the most interesting subjects to learn. I’m always amazed by what I learn and I throughly enjoy it. Thank you for sharing Xo

Greek mythology is one of the most interesting subject to study. I’m always fascinated with Greek and Egyptian history. Thank you for sharing this.
I completely agree Fadima! Egyptian history is so interesting too, I need to find some reads on that. Thank you so much for reading x
I was never one for mythology, but I’ve been forced to learn some by my 9yr old who is obsessed with Rick Riordan. I might try the Stephen Fry book, just so I can hold a conversation with my son!
Honestly, it’s a great starting point and if you’re into audiobooks it’s even better! Love that you two share a passion for books, thank you for reading x
These sound fascinating! I love read mythology in my college drama class
They were one of the best reads for me too! thank you for reading Kalin x
Fantastic post. I like to read about Greek myths since I was 16 – they’re so fun to read. Your recommendation is something that I need now to read more about them. Thank you so much x

I love Greek mythology, I find it fascinating! I hope to read at least one of those books one day when I have time to, they sound very interesting. Thank you for the recommendations.
Thank you so much for reading Natalie and hope you get to read some of them x
I used to be obsessed with Greek Myth because of Percy Jackson haha. I’ve read a few of these and I agree that ASOA is a masterpiece! I story, the EMOTION oof. Great recs 😊
To be honest I never read Percy Jackson! Oh the emotion with that book, still cry just thinking about it but I want to re-read it, I kinda miss them! Thanks for reading Sumedha x
Oh these look fantastic – I’ve seen some of them but not all! I’ll keep an eye out for them as I used to love reading about Greek myths and I haven’t done that in absolutely ages. There’s something that feels really contemporary/timeless about them – I guess because they get to the heart of human nature so well. Thanks for the recommendations!
It’s something you get really into and then start reading something else and forget, but it such a great place to get back to! Thank you so much for reading Kate x
My sister loves Greek Myths and I’ll have to share this list with her!
That’s great! Hope she gets to read some of them, thanks for reading x
I love mythology! Up until this point I have mostly read Celtic Mythology, but I’d like to broaden my horizons a little. Thanks for sharing these and giving me a great starting point with Greek Mythology! I can’t wait to check some of these out!
Well, I might actually read more about Celtic mythology now that you mention it! Hope you like the one you get to read and thank you so much for reading Tiffany x
I do enjoy Greek mythology, and I have read similar books but none of the ones you’ve included in this post. Although some I knew of. I kinda moved out of my re-telling of classic tales and history phase and into other genres, but certainly I’d consider reading these in the future.
I am glad you enjoy Greek mythology too, hope you get to read some. Thanks for reading Giulia x
This is such a interesting post about Greek mythology! I never knew much about it and I’m glad I read this post! x

I’ve always been intrigued about mythology, but I’ve never read any of these. I’m so curious to though, so this list is great to scroll through! I always love hearing about things that others are passionate about, so thank you for sharing! 🙂
I am glad you liked it, hope you get to read something related to mythology soon! Thanks for reading x
Great classic recommendations, I love it

Hi 😌 new post 🚨 New fashion trend from Queen’s Gambit
https://uncuaderno4cero.wordpress.com/
Glad you liked them! Thank you so much for reading x
It’s just great that some of these have been adapted into movies, I love the Odyssey and Achilles, they’re epic. Great list.
Glad you liked the list! Thank you so much for reading Abayomi!
Is the Metamorphoses a single poem that’s so long that it fills fifteen books? I’ve watched a fair few films and documentaries on Greek Mythology which I’ve found fascinating, but I don’t think I’ve never read any books on the subject, Greek philosophy I’ve read books on, however
Basically yes, a longer poem from the creation of the world to the death of Ceasar. It doesn’t really fit in a fixed category as it’s longer than usual. Greek philosophy too is so interesting! Thank you so much for reading x
I loved Greek Mythology at school but it’s not really something I’ve thought much about since. I like the sound of Stephen Fry’s book – I love everything he does!
Rosie
Me too, I think he has a great way to explain things and add some humour to them! Thank you so much for reading Rosie x
I’m obsessed with Madeline Miller! The Song of Achilles remains one of my favourite books of all time so many years after reading it! I really need to read more retellings though because I really love Greek Mythology so this list will definitely come in handy! I actually have The Silence of The Girls on my shelf so I definitely need to get to it soon!
I loved and cried, boy did I cry, but I consider it too one of my favourites! Let me know what you think of The silence of the girls, thank you so much for reading Alice x
I loved Greek mythology at school! I think Stephen Fry’s book may have to be first on my list for a more gentle re-introduction, as I hardly remember anything! Great post 🙂
It’s absolutely the best you can start from and a bit of humour added to it! Thank you so much for reading x
I find Greek Mythology fascinating too but I don’t read about it enough so I’ll definitely be keeping some of these books on my radar!
Hope you can read more of it! Thank you so much for reading Jenny x
I like this post!
I have a number of books on my TBR that are about Greece! I lean towards historic reads but I have started to get into some retellings lately. I’ve been reading the Hades x Persephone series by Scarlett St. Clair and it is great! I had the Disney Hades in my head at the wrong times but I got through it in one piece… ♥
That Hades x Persephone series I wasn’t aware of, thank you for recommending it, I will add it to my TBR! Haha, I think we all start from that Hades and than it’s difficult to see him any other way, thank you so much for reading x
