Greek Mythology has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. So I couldn’t miss the chance to write about the best Greek mythology books you have to read. and in no way this is a complete list, there’s so much about Greek mythology.

On my shelves, you can find a vast assortment of books on the topic, from classics to historical fiction and retelling. It was one of the things I shared with my mum. We didn’t read much together, but were always obsessed with history documentaries. And even though I moved away from home, this passion stuck with me – and her, for that matter!

Then, in school with all the epic poems, it just got even better! All those stories about ancient worlds and heroes and quests. But after a while, with work and life, I forgot about them. Until a couple of years ago, when I found a podcast ‘Let’s talk about myths baby’ that reignited my love for it all. And because of this, I wanted to share with you the best Greek mythology books. Some I have read and loved and some are on my TBR.

Table of Contents

You will find a vast assortment of scholastic greek mythology books, the best mythology retelling for young adults and adults. As well as the best sources on Greek mythology. You know I do not kid around when I say I love something! I go extreme with everything I am passionate about.

But, before we dig into the great stuff and all these best greek mythology books’ suggestions, let’s define what is mythology and see what Greek myths are all about.

What is mythology?

From the Greek ‘MYTHOS’ story of the people and ‘LOGOS’ word or speech. So mythology is defined as the spoken story of the people. Mythology is the study and analysis of the tales and fables of a culture. A collection of stories that deal with different aspects of human conditions and suffering, as well as celestial stories.

Myths express the values and beliefs of a certain culture. It tells the stories of ancestors and about the origins of the world and humans. As well as describing the origin of natural events. (World History)

Greek Mythology is then the collection of stories about the greek gods, heroes and rituals of ancient Greece. Even if viewed as true accounts, as stated by Plato already in the 4th century, they also contained plenty of fictional elements.

  1. Agreed! I’ve always been fascinated by Greek mythology and the stories behind the gods and goddesses. I recently read ‘The Trojan War: A New History’ by Sarah Bradford and found it to be incredibly insightful. Have you read any of these books? Any recommended additions to the list?

    1. So glad you liked the list! I never read anything from Sarah Bradford but adding it to my list! There have been a lot more retellings in the last few years, like Atlanta by Jennifer Saint and one about Pshyche and Eros, but can’t remember the author. I have been rereading a lot lately, so I am not much up to date 🙂

  2. Wow, what an extensive list! I’ve heard so much praise for Circe and Song of Achilles so I can’t wait to read them this month 🙂

  7. As much as I love Greek mythology, I haven’t read many books about it. There are a lot of great-sounding books here that I will need to check out. I’ve had The Song of Achilles on my TBR for a while now, so this is a good reminder that I need to read that one soon.

  8. I’ve read most of the modern retellings you’ve mentioned and I’m slowly mustering the courage to read the classics, though I’ve tried before and they are tricky😅 so I definitely wouldn’t recommend those to start with, but the modern retellings or PJO instead

  9. I don’t think I’ve read any Greek mythology books before but they definitely sound intriguing! x

I know my dad has enjoyed odd ones in the past so I wouldn’t mind picking up some of these for him, and maybe check them out myself afterwards. 1. Oh, it’s amazing and audible even more, Fry has very catchy writing as well as reading! Hope you get to discover more and like it! Thank you for reading x

  19. As I am from Greece I do love Greek mythology. Most of it we studied it at school. Some of them in ancient Greek which was a hard one. I was not aware of most of the books you suggest here but I will have a look at them. What made me feel dissapointed in the past was that most of the new publications had lots of additional fiction included which in many cases was a bit disturbing to me. Anyway, thank you for sharing your passion on our mythology 🙂

    1. That’s so cool! I can only imagine how difficult it must have been in ancient Greek, but it sounds so interesting! I get what you mean! Thank you for reading x

  20. I’m a BIG mythology geek! Doesn’t matter what mythology or time period, I’m there! I’m particularly a big Norse fan but Greek is a close second (hence the nickname Nyx).

  21. I really enjoyed the layout and content of this post. I have an overview of mythology after reading a few of Joseph Campbell’s books, but I’m curious to get back to some classics. I loved the photos too! Thanks for sharing!

  22. It sounds like you’ve got a lot of great recommendations here (I’ve just tabbed a few myself!) I read Sophocles Antigone as part of a Uni course some years ago, I do find mythology interesting though.

  23. Great post! This is such a wonderful collection of books! I love greek mythology based novels as well as retellings, I actually took a classical mythology elective during my undergrad even though it had absolutely nothing to do with my major. I’ve read a quite a few of these, but I’ve never heard of so many on this list, so I’m definitely bookmarking the post to come back to once I’ve finished my current greek mythology read, which is Aeschylus’ Oresteia. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Oh, that sounds like a dream to me! I would have really loved to have a chance to study more about mythology in school! Adding Oresteia to my list too and hope you can find some you like! Thank you for reading x

  24. Wow this is so cool. Love to read about Greek mythology. I will add the list to check out later. Thank you for sharing!

  25. Growing up, I was so obsessed with Greek mythology that I literally took an entire semester of it as my history elective during my senior year of high school! When these stories made a resurgence with Percy Jackson, I was so excited. I never finished that series (though I hope to now in prep for the upcoming Disney+ show) but I loved the concept. However, as an adult, I’ve found it harder to enjoy the books recommended. I was disappointed by Madeline Miller’s books, which are soooo hyped it’s unreal – and after that, I found it harder to discover new books to really enjoy in this genre. However, you listed some lesser-known titles (to me) here, so I’d like to check those out and see if I can revive my old love for Greek mythology!

    1. That sounds totally my dream, I wish our school was set to let you decide what to pick! I must admittedly say that I never read it, so have to add it to my list! I really liked Miller’s, but can understand your point. I think Fry’s ones might be more entertaining, mostly in audiobooks! Thank you for reading Stephanie and hope you find some you like x

  26. Wow, what a great list! I’ve always been interested in Greek Mythology, but I’ve never actually read a fictional retelling before.

  27. Hey, this is an amazing list that you’ve managed to compile! Greek mythology is always so intriguing – Adding these to our TBR right now.

  28. Wow, I haven’t read any Greek mythology since middle school but there’s some good suggestions here!

  29. I still haven’t read any Greek Mythology books as far as I can remember – not even Percy Jackson! I struggle with Fantasy sometimes but I think I’d enjoy some of these books because Greek Mythology is really fascinating!

  30. Wow, these really sound interesting. I think Greek mythology is super fascinating and you’ve shared a great selection of books to read. I’ll defiantly be checking these out. I’m always on the look out for new books to read! Thank you so much for sharing lovely Xo

  51. Oh these look fantastic – I’ve seen some of them but not all! I’ll keep an eye out for them as I used to love reading about Greek myths and I haven’t done that in absolutely ages. There’s something that feels really contemporary/timeless about them – I guess because they get to the heart of human nature so well. Thanks for the recommendations!

    1. It’s something you get really into and then start reading something else and forget, but it such a great place to get back to! Thank you so much for reading Kate x

    1. Well, I might actually read more about Celtic mythology now that you mention it! Hope you like the one you get to read and thank you so much for reading Tiffany x

  52. I do enjoy Greek mythology, and I have read similar books but none of the ones you’ve included in this post. Although some I knew of. I kinda moved out of my re-telling of classic tales and history phase and into other genres, but certainly I’d consider reading these in the future.

  53. I’ve always been intrigued about mythology, but I’ve never read any of these. I’m so curious to though, so this list is great to scroll through! I always love hearing about things that others are passionate about, so thank you for sharing! 🙂

  54. It’s just great that some of these have been adapted into movies, I love the Odyssey and Achilles, they’re epic. Great list.

  55. Is the Metamorphoses a single poem that’s so long that it fills fifteen books? I’ve watched a fair few films and documentaries on Greek Mythology which I’ve found fascinating, but I don’t think I’ve never read any books on the subject, Greek philosophy I’ve read books on, however

    1. Basically yes, a longer poem from the creation of the world to the death of Ceasar. It doesn’t really fit in a fixed category as it’s longer than usual. Greek philosophy too is so interesting! Thank you so much for reading x

  56. I loved Greek Mythology at school but it’s not really something I’ve thought much about since. I like the sound of Stephen Fry’s book – I love everything he does!

  57. I’m obsessed with Madeline Miller! The Song of Achilles remains one of my favourite books of all time so many years after reading it! I really need to read more retellings though because I really love Greek Mythology so this list will definitely come in handy! I actually have The Silence of The Girls on my shelf so I definitely need to get to it soon!

    1. I loved and cried, boy did I cry, but I consider it too one of my favourites! Let me know what you think of The silence of the girls, thank you so much for reading Alice x

  58. I loved Greek mythology at school! I think Stephen Fry’s book may have to be first on my list for a more gentle re-introduction, as I hardly remember anything! Great post 🙂

  59. I like this post!

I have a number of books on my TBR that are about Greece! I lean towards historic reads but I have started to get into some retellings lately. I’ve been reading the Hades x Persephone series by Scarlett St. Clair and it is great! I had the Disney Hades in my head at the wrong times but I got through it in one piece… ♥

    1. That Hades x Persephone series I wasn’t aware of, thank you for recommending it, I will add it to my TBR! Haha, I think we all start from that Hades and than it’s difficult to see him any other way, thank you so much for reading x
