Easy Southern Buttermilk Pie For Christmas
GUEST POST | www.hacketthillfarm.com | Southern Buttermilk Pie
About the blogger: Hey, y’all! I am so excited to be here at the Grumpy Olive with all of you!
My name is Kimberly and I am a momma, wife, homesteader, baker, and blogger. I own and run our blog Hackett Hill Farm (also our homestead’s name) where we keep our readers updated on farmhouse renovations, yummy recipes, and everything homesteading. I have been homesteading for about a year and a half and made the decision to do so when my husband and I purchased an 1850 farmhouse right next door to us. We have spent the last year learning all about construction, homesteading, and blogging. We currently raise cows and chickens, but will be expanding in the future to include bees, pigs, and Katahdin sheep! My poor husband is a real trooper when it comes to allowing me to have all of the animals!

We hope to see y’all there and look forward to getting to know you better!
Christmas would not be complete at my home without this easy southern buttermilk pie. It has been a favourite of mine since I was a little girl and continues to bring joy to my Christmas table year after year.
Today I am going to be sharing one of my very favourite Christmas pies and that is an Easy Southern Buttermilk Pie!

Why Buttermilk Pie?
I remember when I first discovered buttermilk pie. I was about twelve years old and we had just gotten satellite television. This was a big deal for us because I was used to turning an antenna in the cold to pick up three channels! So satellite was big time!
Back then, I loved watching Food Network and dreamed of one day having my own Food Network show. I started spending all the time I could in the kitchen trying new recipes. Then, I would read cookbooks as if they were romance novels. I loved the feeling I got when someone would tell me how delicious my food was.
I remember the day I found the recipe for buttermilk pie in my grandma’s old cookbook. Back then, I knew it was a recipe I just had to try. I feel in love with the creamy custard dessert and while I have adapted the recipe I originally made, I still have that old cookbook of my grandma’s.

What Does Buttermilk Pie Taste Like?
Heaven…Southern Buttermilk Pie tastes like heaven. What else is there to say? Old fashioned Buttermilk pie is a party in your mouth! I am a big fan of tangy-sweet combinations and buttermilk pie delivers on that taste composition. The custard will make your tastebuds dance with its buttery richness. Some have likened buttermilk pie to a creme brûlée, but it is so much easier to make!
Have I sold you on it yet?
Ingredients for the Southern Buttermilk Pie
The ingredients for this old fashioned custard pie are so simple and common in any pantry or fridge which makes it a great pie for those last-minute Christmas Parties.
Like most great pies, it starts with a great pie crust. I prefer a pie crust that is flaky and buttery for this pie. You can check out my favourite pie crust recipe on our blog or use your own! The key is to make sure you pre-bake your crust to prevent it from being soggy in the end.
Now that we have the pie crust settled, we can talk about the custard.

Let’s check out the recipe now!

Easy Southern Buttermilk Pie
Ingredients
- For the pastry
- 1 x pastry recipe of your choice
- For the custard
- 5 Egg Yolks – This is a traditional custard pie that uses eggs to thicken the custard.
- ¾ cup of Sugar – We use standard white granulated sugar
- ½ All-purpose flour – We recommend you sift the flour to make sure you don’t have any clumps in your custard
- 4 Tbsps. Melted butter cooled
- ½ tsp Baking Soda
- 2 cups Buttermilk
- 2 Tbsps Lemon Juice
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Instructions
- Pre-bake your pie case to the recipe of your choice. Follow the instructions you have on hand for blind-baking.
- In a large mixing bowl add the egg yolks and beat on high speed until they are light and fluffy. They should look like whipped butter.
- Slowly add in the sugar beating constantly and scraping down the sides.
- Once the butter is fully incorporated slowly add in the sifted flour. The egg mixture will be thick at this point and may stick to the sides and bottom of your bowl. Ensure you are scraping with a rubber spatula to fully incorporate. Beat for about three minutes until fully incorporated.
- Slowly stream in the melted butter, continuing to beat the mixture.
- Next, whisk in the buttermilk, baking soda, lemon juice, and vanilla by hand. Whisk to ensure all the egg mixture is well incorporated and the filling is smooth.
- Slowly pour the filling into the prepared pie crust. We recommend placing the pie to bake on a baking sheet to catch any potential overflow.
- Cover the pie crust edges with foil or crust shield to prevent over-browning.
- Bake at 220°C for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 180°C degrees and bake for another 35 to 40 minutes or until the centre is set.
