The Birth of Rice Krispies
Before we dive into the world of Rice Krispie treats, let’s start with the roots of it all – Rice Krispies cereal itself. In the 1920s, the Kellogg Company introduced Rice Krispies, a breakfast cereal that quickly became a household favourite. This iconic cereal was created by accident when a batch of rice-based dough was accidentally left out and hardened. The result was a crispy, airy cereal that snapped, crackled, and popped when milk was added. It was a revelation in breakfast innovation.
Now, you might be wondering, how did we go from a breakfast cereal to the delightful Rice Krispie treats we know and love today? Well, it all started in the kitchen.
The Birth of Rice Krispie Treats
The story of Rice Krispie treats begins in the 1930s when Mildred Day, a Kellogg’s home economist, decided to experiment with the popular Rice Krispies cereal. She was looking for a way to create a fun and delicious treat that kids and families could enjoy. And that’s when she stumbled upon the idea of mixing melted marshmallows with the crispy rice cereal.
Day’s creation was simple yet brilliant – the Rice Krispie treat. She called it the “Rice Krispies Marshmallow Squares” and shared the recipe with her colleagues at Kellogg’s. The treat quickly gained popularity and was included in Kellogg’s advertising campaigns. By 1940, the recipe for Rice Krispie treats was printed on the Rice Krispies cereal boxes, making it accessible to households all over the United States.
The delightful simplicity of Rice Krispie treats caught on like wildfire, and soon, they were being made in kitchens worldwide. The world had discovered a new favourite sweet indulgence, and the classic Rice Krispie treat was here to stay.
The song that inspired our MM Rice Krispie Treats
Monster Mash is a classic novelty song that has become a staple of Halloween music. The song was written by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and Leonard Capizzi and was performed by Bobby Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers. It was released in 1962 and became an instant hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart just before Halloween that year.
The song’s lyrics describe a mad scientist’s laboratory where a monster mash party is taking place. The song features Pickett’s imitation of actor Boris Karloff’s voice – known for his portrayal of Frankenstein’s monster- which adds a humorous and spooky element to the song. The lyrics also reference various classic monsters such as Dracula, the Wolfman and Igor, and describe their dance moves at the party.
Monster Mash is known for its catchy melody and fun, upbeat tempo, making it a perfect addition to Halloween playlists. It has a light-hearted and campy feel, which has made it a favourite for Halloween parties and celebrations for decades. The song’s popularity endures, and it is often played on the radio and at Halloween events, becoming a timeless classic associated with the holiday.
Bobby Pickett’s quirky, theatrical performance of Monster Mash and the song’s unique blend of humour, horror, and danceable music have made it a beloved Halloween anthem. It’s a song that continues to bring smiles and spooky fun to people of all ages during the Halloween season.
But Back To The MM Rice Krispie Treats We Go
Now that you know the fascinating history behind Rice Krispies and their famous treats, but also the inspiration behind our idea, let’s get down to the delicious business of making these mouthwatering treats.
What ingredients do I need to make these MM Rice Krispie Treats?
You will need very few ingredients for the MM Rice Krispie Treats, so let’s see them together now:
- Unsalted Butter: Unsalted butter is a dairy product made from churning cream. It has a smooth, creamy texture and a rich, buttery flavour. It is a versatile ingredient used in both savoury and sweet recipes. In the context of MM Rice Krispie treats, it’s often melted and mixed with marshmallows to create a binding agent for the cereal;
- Mini Marshmallows: Mini marshmallows are small, soft, and spongy confections made from sugar, water, and gelatin. They have a sweet, marshmallowy flavour and a chewy texture. They are a key ingredient in the MM Rice Krispie treats. When melted, they create a sticky, gooey mixture that binds the cereal together, giving the treats their signature chewy texture;
- Rice Krispies: Rice Krispies are a brand of breakfast cereal, typically made from crisped rice – rice and sugar paste that is formed into rice shapes, cooked, and toasted. In the context of Rice Krispie treats, Rice Krispies cereal is mixed with the melted marshmallow mixture. They add a crispy, crunchy texture to the treats, balancing the chewy sweetness of the marshmallows;
- Vanilla: Vanilla is a flavour derived from the vanilla bean. It has a sweet and slightly floral aroma and is commonly used as a flavour enhancer. In the MM Rice Krispie treats, a small amount of vanilla extract is often added to enhance the overall flavour and aroma. It provides a pleasant background note to the sweetness of the marshmallows;
- Salt: Salt is a mineral that enhances the flavour of dishes and is often used to balance sweetness and other flavours. A pinch of salt in the MM Rice Krispie treats can help balance the sweetness of the marshmallows and other ingredients, providing a subtle contrast to the sugary taste;
- White Chocolate: White chocolate is made from cocoa butter, sugar, and milk solids, but it lacks the cocoa solids found in regular chocolate. It has a creamy, sweet flavour. White chocolate can be melted and used to coat or drizzle over the MM Rice Krispie treats, adding a rich, sweet, and creamy layer of flavour and a decorative touch;
- Food Coloring: Food colouring is a substance used to add colour to food and beverages. It comes in various forms, including liquid, gel, and powdered. Food colouring can be used to tint the white chocolate, creating visually appealing and festive treats;
- Sugar Eyes: Sugar eyes are small, round, edible decorations made from sugar or fondant. They resemble eyes and are often used to add a playful and whimsical element to desserts. Sugar eyes are commonly used to give Rice Krispie treats a fun and spooky appearance for Halloween. They can be attached to the treats with a bit of melted chocolate to create monsters or creatures’ eyes.
