Nutella Muffin Recipe With Fresh Strawberries
This post for the Nutella Muffin Recipe was initially published on the 29th of May 2014.
Muffins happen to be a favourite of ours around here. From these to the Matcha mochi muffins and even the chocolate chip muffins, we love trying as many as we can whenever we can. And these ones in particular, the Nutella muffins, are the ones you need to try. They are soft, packed with fruit and with a heart of chocolate hazelnut spread. What more could you wish for?
Adding fresh strawberries to this Nutella muffin recipe is an extra little bit you absolutely need to elevate an otherwise very simple recipe. And when strawberries are in season, what better excuse than to include them in this recipe? Nutella and strawberries are made to be together, so go ahead and mix them up, because it’s time to rock & roll some Nutella muffins!
I love strawberries, always have and always will. I have been addicted to them since I was a baby – my first cake was a strawberry and cream, and no, I did not smash it, I ate it all. So this Nutella muffin recipe has to be a celebratory one. I would turn into a strawberry and eat myself if I could. That’s how addicted I am to those beautiful berries.
And who doesn’t love Nutella, anyway? A jar of it doesn’t tend to last long around here, and I am sure it’s a very similar situation where you are. So make sure you buy one and hide it until it’s time to make these beautiful Nutella muffins using this super easy Nutella muffin recipe.

Delicious Nutella Muffin Recipe With Fresh Strawberries
When you are craving that fresh taste of strawberries, but want to try something different than your usual strawberries and cream, the Nutella muffin recipe I’m about to share with you is the one you absolutely need to try.
Mainly because it’s quick to make, extremely quick to put together and bake. And the muffin itself it’s soft and spongy, fruity and packed with a heart of chocolate hazelnut spread. If that’s not dreamy, then I don’t know what is.
Hit me up with all about Nutella
We all know Nutella comes with a bad rep. First off, the fact that it’s not the healthiest item to have in large quantities – but what is healthy in large quantities when it comes to a product made in a factory? Nutella is high in calories, sugar and fat, all of which could cause health problems over time if consumed in high amounts. It does contain more natural ingredients than some similar products, which may be attractive to consumers (Healthline).
Nutella was created during the Second World War when baker Pietro Ferrero added ground hazelnuts to a chocolate spread to make up for a shortage of cocoa in the country. I mean, the rest is history of course – an empire was born there and then! It’s now consumed worldwide and probably one of the products most discussed too.
Oh yes, you got it – I am talking about the issue with palm oil. Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil that comes from the fruit of the oil palm tree, and it gives Nutella its trademark creamy texture and spreadability. Palm oil though has been and continues to be a major driver of deforestation of some of the world’s most biodiverse forests, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino.
But even if the palm oil could be replaced, it’s worth mentioning that under ideal conditions, high-yield oil palm cultivars can produce more than 25 times as much oil as soy can for the same area of farmland. Thus, ironically, a ban on palm oil would lead to a catastrophic increase in deforestation, as anything we replace it with will need much more land to grow on (BBC).
and what about strawberries?
It’s a completely different story when it comes to the strawberries in this Nutella muffin recipe. Strawberries are not only good, but they are also good for your whole body!
Strawberries naturally deliver vitamins, fibre, and particularly high levels of antioxidants known as polyphenols — without any sodium, fat, or cholesterol. They are among the top 20 fruits in antioxidant capacity and are a good source of manganese and potassium. Just one serving – about eight strawberries – provides more vitamin C than an orange (WebMD).
Whether you knew that or not, strawberries are not actually berries or fruits, even, but enlarged receptacles of the flower. They were first cultivated in ancient Rome, and they are now the most popular berry fruit in the world.
What’s so good about strawberries?
Strawberries are rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants, which help reduce the risk of serious health conditions like cancer, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. They are also an excellent source of:
- Magnesium
- Phosphorous
- Calcium
- Potassium
- Folate
- Vitamin K
Strawberries are loaded with antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds, including:
- Pelargonidin – The main anthocyanin in strawberries, this compound is responsible for the bright red colour;
- Ellagic acid – Found in high amounts in strawberries, ellagic acid is a polyphenol antioxidant that may have many health benefits;
- Ellagitannins – Related to ellagic acid, ellagitannins are converted to ellagic acid in your gut;
- Procyanidins – These are antioxidants commonly found in strawberry flesh and seeds that may have beneficial health effects.
What ingredients do I need for the Nutella Muffin?
First off, you will need 1 egg at room temperature. Then you will need some dry ingredients like plain flour – or all purpose flour -, white sugar, baking powder and salt. Lastly, you will need full-fat milk and fresh strawberries.
Then, of course, the Nutella – this is difficult to confirm a weight for, but I would say you will do less than a teaspoon into each muffin. And the topping, of course, let’s not forget the topping! The chopped hazelnuts – I didn’t roast them, but you can if you fancy! – and the extra sugar so that it caramelises with the nuts. Yum to the yum with the Nutella muffin recipe!
And how do I make the Nutella muffins?
First off, you will turn on the oven and preheat it to 180°C. Then you will need to take a big bowl and beat together the egg and sugar, until light and fluffy. Now you can add the milk and combine.
In a separate bowl mix the rest of the dry ingredients: the flour, baking powder and salt. We don’t use baking soda in this case, but you will not need it because the muffins will be as fluffy as they get anyway! Now add the dry ingredients to the rest and mix it in.
When all the ingredients are mixed well together, add the chopped strawberries and fold them in the muffin batter by hand. Prepare the muffin tin with paper liners and fill each case 1/4 of the way, then place some Nutella in the middle and fill it for the other two quarters with the rest of the muffin batter.
Sprinkle the chopped hazelnuts and half a teaspoon of sugar on top, then bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden. Then let them cool completely before serving, they work extremely well for breakfast, just saying!

Can I substitute or replace anything?
These homemade muffins are versatile when it comes to what you would want to do with them. Let’s start with the fruit: if you don’t fancy strawberries, you can go for raspberries as well or even remove it fully and just go for chocolate chips instead. Who doesn’t like chocolate on chocolate?
We have also not used butter but milk – this is to keep them lighter, but butter will work if you don’t have milk. We have not tried it, so we don’t know in what measure that could be. We have also omitted vanilla extract, but you are more than welcome to add half a teaspoon of it to the batter.
Any other notes or tips?
The Nutella muffin recipe I’m sharing today it’s all about being Nutella stuffed. But not all Nutella muffins need to be the same, and you could actually do a Nutella swirl instead, which is going to also work perfectly. And turn them into Nutella swirl muffins!
So this is it for the nutella muffin recipe with fresh strawberries!
The Nutella muffins recipe might be over, but you might be after some extra recipes so it’s time to see some:
- 3 ingredients Nutella cookies;
- No bake cookie dough bites;
- Pistachio Lemon cake;
- Lavender lemonade cocktail.
