Summer is around the corner by now, and even if the weather seems to be rainy around here, these blue mojitos only make me dream of hot summer days. These cocktails will be the quickest ones you can whip up for when the good weather comes. If you are a fan of mojitos or you are just after a refreshing drink full of mint and lime and an amazing blue color, then you are in for a treat!

And with a colour like this, it’s surely an eye-catcher! Mojitos have always been Simona’s drink of choice when out, so when I mixed these up, she was more than eager to try this blue curaçao mojito. And can you blame her? What I loved most was the smell of lime and mint, such a great combo and it would make the perfect base for a refreshing summer lemonade too!

What are blue mojitos?

This blue mojito cocktail is a reinvented version of the classic mojito with a colourful twist that will be the perfect highlight for your summer gatherings or pool parties! Easy and quick to make, you won’t even need a cocktail shaker for this.

These blue mojitos are made with a combination of white light rum, blue curaçao, fresh lime juice and fresh mint leaves. The simple syrup will add a touch of sweetness, while the soda or sparkling water will add some fizz to it!

What is blue curacao?

Blue curaçao is an orange-flavoured liqueur made with sugar cane alcohol and the dried peels of laraha oranges, a bitter kind of citrus that is originally from the Caribbean Curaçao island.

The blue hue of this liqueur is achieved by adding blue food colouring. Curaçao blue is not the only one sold, you will also find an orange version and a regular clear one, as well as green. This liqueur will give a distinctive sweet orange flavor with bitterness at the end of all of your drinks.

What ingredients will I need for this blue Curacao mojito?

The blue mojitos ingredients start with fresh mint first and limes. The fresher the better, when it comes to mint and lime as we will have to muddle them to get the best flavour out of them. Then you will need simple syrup, which you will find instructions for just below (it’s an easy peasy process), ice and soda or sparkling water.

Regarding the alcohol component of this recipe, you will need white rum and blue curacao. Light white rum, will balance your mojito, so avoid using any dark rum as it might overpower the flavours. And the curacao will give that hue to this cocktail.

Can I substitute anything in this blue mojito cocktail recipe?

You can make some slight changes to the recipes depending on your taste. You can substitute the blue curacao liqueur with triple sec and food colouring in case you can’t find any at the shop. As you can read below, you can also substitute mint with basil, rosemary or thyme.

When it comes to soda, you can easily substitute it for sparkling water, sprite or tonic water too. I haven’t tried the blue mojitos with sprite or the latter personally, so you might need some adjustments. This Blue Mojito recipe is versatile and can be adjusted to suit your tastes. For a sweeter drink, add more simple syrup; for a stronger drink, add more white rum.

What equipment will I need for this easy cocktail recipe?

These blue mojitos don’t require much equipment and you won’t even need a cocktail shaker, so win-win! Collins glasses are usually used for mojitos, which are tall and clear glasses, but any of them will do, to be honest. Unless you feel like having some around for later use, just get hold of a glass that is tall enough.

This blue mojito also calls for a muddler. There are wooden muddlers and stainless steel muddlers, and depending on what bartenders you ask, there are preferences. If you get a wooden one make sure it’s made of durable wood and not lacquered. If you get a stainless steel muddler, some bartenders said they might scratch glasses, but they will be dishwasher safe. As much as with glasses, you can make do with something you have at home like a wooden spoon. You can use the back of it to muddle your mint and lime, the same results with less objects around your kitchen! Something else you might want to add to this blue mojito cocktail is a straw to add a final touch, but that’s up to you. We used reusable ones and they actually made a cute add-on for the pictures.

How to make blue mojitos at home

This blue curacao mojito is so easy and quick to make. You will have to start to muddle mint leaves, simple syrup and lime juice in your Collins glass. If you don’t have one of those glasses, don’t worry, you can use any tall glass you have at home and if you want to emphasize the colour even more, go for a clear one.

Then you will fill the glass with ice, and pour the white rum and blue curaçao. Top up your mix with club soda and stir it well. Garnish your cocktails with more mint sprigs and lime wedges. You could also opt for raspberries or blueberries instead of mint.

On another note, for the simple syrup, you can make a quick homemade one in ten minutes. All you have to do is use 1 cup of water and 1 cup of granulated sugar. Over medium heat, heat the water and sugar until it dissolves and let it simmer. Take it off the heat and let it cool before using or store it in an airtight bottle. You can also buy simple syrup in any grocery shop, but being so easy to make, you can make it at home and use it for more cocktail recipes too.

Can you make a mojito without mint?

A classic mojito recipe calls for mint as one of the ingredients you can’t pass on. However, if you don’t have fresh mint handy – no, dried mint won’t be the same – and only have other herbs, some of them can make a good substitute. So yes, you can make mojitos without mint. You can use in its stead thyme, rosemary, tarragon and basil, which will enhance the mix of rum and lime. (Thrillist)

Others also call for cilantro and jalapeño as great alternatives to fresh mint, or mint liqueur and bitters are also other options. Just don’t use dry mint!

Can I make this blue mojito into a mocktail?

You absolutely can! What is better known as a virgin mojito drink is the mocktail version of a mojito. And let me tell you, it’s as delicious as its alcoholic counterpart if not more! It’s the perfect refreshing mocktail to have on a hot summer day. But how to do it?

You will need fresh mint, lime, simple syrup, ice and club soda or soda water. This blue mojito non alcoholic recipe will be the perfect one for kids and adults alike for any gathering you will be hosting this summer! And if you want a fun garnish for it, add some blueberries to your mocktail for an even more impressive blue mojito mocktail!
