What better way to welcome the warmer season than with an eco-friendly picnic? The season is upon us and depending on where you live, you might already have had some very warm weather. When I think of summer I think of blue skies, good food, great company, a great book and sitting on the grass.

There is nothing better than grounding yourself or relaxing just by being on the grass and reading. At least for me, that’s the best I can get. Although picnics can sound idyllic, sometimes you can find your spot or nearby filled with leftovers and trash. And plastic wrappers no one decided to properly dispose of.

Having an eco-friendly picnic is not just about bringing your own food and being respectful of others while there. It’s also about leaving the place clean for the planet and whoever comes next. This is why we decided to partner with Klean Kanteen® to bring you the best eco-friendly picnic set around and even some food inspiration!

And with National Picnic Week approaching in the UK (19th – 26th of June), this couldn’t have come at a better time! So get ready with a fresh drink and sit back, we are going on a virtual eco-friendly picnic right now!

Who are Klean Kanteen®? How can they help you create your eco-friendly picnic set?

Klean Kanteen® was born in 2004 in the USA. It was born to fill the lack of reusable stainless steel water bottles in the market and avoid plastic ones. From the first day to today, Klean Kanteen® has been a family and employee-owned business. They are a climate-neutral certified B corp brand, in order to be transparent about the environmental impact and be accountable. Moreover, they donate 1% of every sale to organizations and charities that work to help the planet and the conservation of land and water.

Klean Kanteen® has at heart the well-being of the consumer and planet alike. That’s why some products are made using post-consumer recycled steel, Klean Kanteen® are the first bottle brand on the market to make this change. And their aim by 2023 is to have 95% of their range made from recycled steel.

Thanks to the food grade stainless steel, all the products Klean Kanteen® makes can be reused over and over again. And they are easy to clean, dishwasher safe and help keep your food and drink fresh for longer.

Klean Kanteen® kindly gifted us the perfect eco-friendly picnic set to start us off and cover the food and drink part! (The most important in our opinion!). We got:

  • a set of food boxes;
  • a set of insulated canisters;
  • a set of metal straws;
  • a set of steel cups;
  • an insulated bottle with a pour through cap.

1. Steel Food Box Set – £49.95

First and foremost, the is no picnic if you don’t bring food right? And what better way to store your food than in reusable containers? This set of food boxes is perfect to bring a main, a snack and a salad. Or whatever you prefer best. It comes in three sizes: a 7 oz (207 ml – snack size), a 20 oz (591 ml – lunch size) and a 32 oz (1005 ml – meal size).

This set is made with BPA-free stainless steel, food-grade silicone, leakproof and press-fit lids that make it easier to keep your food fresh for longer. And to be on the practical side too, they are all dishwasher safe, easy to clean, won’t rust and won’t retain any flavours. They were the ones I was most excited to try out and they did not let me down! Thanks to their shape, they are also easy to bring around and fit in your picnic basket.

What food did we bring in our boxes and canisters for our eco-friendly picnic?

We brought some easy dishes to make. We had some vegan scrambled egg sandwiches in the lunch box. Recipe will come soon, because you have to try this! Then we brought a salad with mozzarella and tomatoes in the meal box. And last but not least we brought some nuts and strawberries in the snack box.

In the canisters, we had an assortment of veggies like cucumber and carrots and a vegan dip. We opted for a quick vegan tzatziki, fresh and minty, perfect for a warm day or everyday afternoon snack. And last but not least, for the sweet tooth, we also had some chocolate chip cookies.

2. Insulated TK Canisters – £29.95

Another great add-on to your eco-friendly picnic set is an insulated canister. Whether you are bringing hot or cold food, Klean Kanteen’s® canisters can help you keep your food stored for longer. From a minimum of 5 hours in the 8 oz canister to 11 hours in the 32 oz one. And keep food cold from a minimum of 20 hours in the 8 oz canister to 45 hours in the 32 oz canister.

Thanks to the TK Closure™ lid for leakproof storage and the Climate Lock™ double wall for thermal insulation, the canisters are set to become your favourites during your activities. Whether you are taking your food at work or storing some soup or take away for the next day. The canisters are easy to clean, dishwasher safe, BPA-free, easy to carry with their swivel loop and stackable. And they also come in an amazing limited edition tofu print.

3. Set Of Four Stainless Steel Straws – £9.95

Another must for an eco-friendly picnic set is straws. We already spoke about straws in the sustainable kitchenware and eco-friendly easy swaps posts before. And with an estimated of half a billion straws used in the USA alone daily (earthday.org), we need to find a solution.

So if you are an avid straw user and don’t need the plastic ones for medical reasons, you should swap for a more sustainable version. Steel straws are perfect for the summer and any cold drinks. Perfect in tumblers or regular cups. Made with high quality stainless steel and removable food grade silicone tips to make them even more comfortable.

The set includes four metal straws with silicone mouth pieces, which are dishwasher safe, easy to clean and BPA-free. They are not recommended for hot liquids due to steel becoming very hot.

4. Set Of Stainless Steel Cups – £34.95

Next on our eco friendly picnic set, is steel cups. Whether you are having a cocktail or just having a juice, these are the perfect add-on to your picnic. Or to bring while at home, while camping, at a festival or just while spending the day outdoors.

They are easy to clean, lightweight and stackable. Dishwasher safe and BPA-free too. And, you can also get a lid and straw for it to use as a tumbler (only on the 16 oz pint glasses).

5 Insulated 25 oz Pour Through Cap Bottle – £34.95

Last but not least in our eco-friendly picnic set, is the insulated pour through bottle. Now I have already raved numerous times about Klean Kanteen’s® bottles as they have been my favourites for years. But this is the perfect size for wine, cocktails, coffee or any drinks you might prefer. The 25 oz bottle (739 ml – which fits a regular wine bottle for anyone wondering) can keep your drinks hot for 24 hours and cold for 80 hours thanks to its Climate Lock™ double-wall vacuum insulation.

The pour through cap, which can be used 360°, helps keeping your drink fresh, prevent thermal loss and oxygenation which could impact the flavours. Moreover, for anyone that knows the importance of recycling, these bottles are made with 90% postconsumer 18/8 stainless steel. The bottle is chip resistant, dishwasher safe, leakproof and BPA-free. And has also an impact base cap, in case you are clumsy as I am and drop it on the pavement when coming back from your picnic!

Now it’s only a choice of what to drink! We opted for our strawberry lemonade. But you could also pick from a refreshing melon cucumber gin cocktail or a pear coffee and honey spritzer. Or choose a spiked chai drink or in autumn a pumpkin spiced latte.

What else will you need for your eco-friendly picnic set?

We covered everything food and drink-wise, but what else will you need for your zero waste picnic? Well, you can’t miss cloth napkins, bamboo cutlery or aluminium/steel cutlery to bring with you. Any reusable plates to share your food with friends. Bags in case you have any leftovers that don’t fit your containers. A blanket, or maybe even more than one. Some entertainment like cards and board games. And lastly, a picnic basket to store all your precious food in. But in case you don’t have one, why not try to thrift one? Or just use a bag as we did!

What do you need to remember to do for your eco-friendly picnic?

  • organisation is key;
  • bring your own food – it can be fun and will save you money too;
  • there are never too many snacks;
  • store your food properly to keep it fresh and tasty;
  • bring your own drinks;
  • bring any leftovers home to have later in the day;
  • bring any rubbish you might have made home to dispose of it properly;
  • clean after yourselves;
  • bring some entertainment;
  • pack everything in your bag;
  • pack some comfy blankets and pillows to sit on;
  • have some fun!

We are at the end of our eco-friendly picnic set with Klean Kanteen®! Do you love having picnics? How do you plan yours? Would you like to try having a sustainable picnic?

  1. These are amazing ideas! I had never thought to get stainless steal cups! We just use plastic re-useable cups but they’ve been getting battered lately! I’ll have to invest in some stainless steel straws and cups for our next outing. We don’t go for picnics often due to our horrible weather, but they’d be good to even have for use around the house or at parties!
