What is paprika?

Paprika is a spice made from sweet dried peppers (Capsicum annuum) ground to a fine powder. It’s widely used in cuisines around the world, mostly to add flavour, depth and colour. The peppers used are indigenous to Central Mexico and were introduced to Europe through the spice trade in the 16th century. It’s now a central ingredient to Hungarian, Spanish and Portuguese cuisine.

There are different types of paprika which range from sweet and mild to rich and smoky:

  • sweet paprika – mild, slightly sweet and bright red, often used for the color and warmth (what we will be using in our feta paprika dip recipe today);
  • smoked paprika – made from sweet peppers dried over wood smoke. It’s deep, ric,h and smoky;
  • hot paprika – spicier, with more heat and intensity;
  • Hungarian paprika – which comes in seven different flavour profiles, from sweet to pungent;
  • Spanish paprika – also known as pimentón, it’s usually made with smoked red peppers; the flavour depends on the blend of peppers used. (Institute of culinary education)

Health benefits of paprika spice:

  • rich in antioxidants and nutrients, including vitamin A;
  • may help eye health as it contains vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin and beta carotene;
  • help maintain a healthy blood thanks to vitamin E and iron, which help create healthy red blood cells;
  • may help reduce inflammation;
  • may help reduce cholesterol levels;
  • may improve blood sugar control;
  • may help reduce the risk of cancer;
  • contains compounds that can support circulation and metabolism;
  • low in calories & easy to add to your diet. (healthline)

What is feta?

Feta is a tangy, crumbly cheese traditionally made from sheep’s milk or a mixture of sheep’s and goat’s milk. Originating in Greece, it’s a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product, meaning authentic feta must come from specific regions in Greece and follow strict production standards. Its salty, tangy flavor and creamy texture make it a staple in Mediterranean cuisine, often featured in salads, pastries, dips, and pasta dishes.

Feta cheese also has plenty of benefits, like:

  • rich in calcium – which we need for healthy bones, teeth, muscles, as well as nerve function;
  • high in protein;
  • helps to keep you full for longer;
  • may support gut health as it contains gut friendly bacterias;
  • provides beneficial fatty acids. (goodfood)

As usual its suggested to consume feta cheese in moderation as it has a high sodium content and contains saturated fats.

What ingredients do I need for this feta paprika dip?

To make this paprika dipping sauce you will need:

  • Feta cheese – the main superstar of this recipe. Creamy, salty base of the dip that gives it body and tang;
  • Roasted red peppers – they add natural sweetness, smokiness, and a soft, silky texture, as well as colour to your dip;
  • Extra virgin olive oil – helps everything blend smoothly while adding richness, plus it can be used on top as garnish;
  • Lemon juice – brings brightness to the feta and cuts through the creaminess;
  • Sweet paprika – adds warmth, color, and a subtle sweet flavour;
  • Parsley – add it on top as a garnish.

How do I make this feta paprika dip?

This paprika feta dip is so easy and quick to make. You will start off by roughly chopping your red peppers and then roasting them at 200°C for 20 minutes or until cooked and soft (in case you can use already roasted peppers you buy at the supermarket to make it even quicker).

Add the roasted bell pepper to a food processor (you can also use an immersion blender if you don’t have one) along with the feta, extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice and sweet paprika. Blend until all the ingredients are combined. You can go as smooth as you like by blending it even more (it just depends on the texture you prefer to achieve).

Spoon the paprika dip into a bowl, drizzle with olive oil and garnish with parsley or fresh basil. Serve with bread or chips and enjoy!

How do I store the paprika dip?

This feta pepper dip is perfect to make in advance and store in an airtight container for a couple of days in the fridge. Just make sure to stir it and let it sit at room temperature before serving it to your guests.

And as a tip, make sure to garnish only when you are ready to serve. Olive oil can firm up slightly when in the fridge, but garnishing last-minute will help.

And yes, this greek paprika dip can actually be frozen too, but with some changes! Freezing feta and olive oil will change the texture, which means that if you want to freeze the dip, it’s better if you use it as a pasta sauce, in wraps or on toast instead of serving it as a dip.

To freeze your feta paprika dip without sour cream, you will spoon it into a freezer-safe container and leave some space on top, as it can expand and freeze for up to two months. When ready to use, thaw it overnight in the fridge and blend it again to make it creamy.

What can I have paprika dip with?

This feta paprika dip has plenty of uses and can be paired with plenty of ingredients like:

  • as a sandwich spread – the perfect spread instead of the usual mayo, perfect to pair with roasted veggies, chicken, halloumi or falafel;
  • with pita or flatbread – a classic pairing perfect to scoop up this delicious feta dip;
  • with roasted vegetables – drizzle over cauliflowers, aubergines, mushrooms, carrots, potatoes or tomatoes;
  • with crackers or chips – use as a dip for crackers, pita chips, fries or even avocado fries or chicken fries;
  • as a pasta sauce – the perfect pasta base, add a splash of pasta water and get the creamiest of sauces;
  • on toast or crostini – spread thickly on top and add garlic oil, herbs, or a sprinkle of chili flakes;
  • as a mezze-style dip – serve it alongside olives, grilled vegetables, pita, cucumbers, carrots, falafel for a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern platter;
  • as a stuffing for vegetables – perfect to fill bell peppers, squashes and aubergines before roasting;
  • as a sauce in grain and salad bowls – add a dollop on your salad or grain bowl for an added creaminess;
  • in burgers and wraps – this would have been the perfect spread for our oyster mushroom burgers or to pair with our hot dog buns;
