Easy Hot Honey Recipe – Quick Homemade Sauce
What I love most about savory cooking is that it’s so versatile, combos come to me while cooking and this hot honey recipe I think is the best quick recipe that can really take a dish to the next level with just a drizzle! Yes, you read that right, a drizzle can make a world of change and if I have to be honest, this hot honey can work so well from roasted vegetables to ice cream!

What is hot honey recipe?
Hot honey is a delicious, sweet and spicy condiment perfect to be drizzled over everything and anything, and no, I am not exaggerating! It’s easy, quick and honestly a litteral no brainer. This spicy honey recipe is so versatile too!
What ingredients do I need for this hot honey recipe?
- honey: sweet, sticky base that carries the heat of the chilli and gives that glossy drizzle. You can use any type of honey you prefer, from local to a single-flower honey. We used millefiori, which is a mix of flowers and we loved it;
- red pepper flakes: they infuse the honey with a slow, warm kick. You can either use sliced fresh chilli peppers or, as we did, use chilli flakes, which are much easier to find in any spice cabinet. But that’s what makes this recipe really versatile;
- apple cider vinegar: adds a tang that balances the sweetness and kick of the chilli flakes.
How to make hot honey recipe?
To start off this quick hot honey recipe, pour the honey and chilli flakes into a small saucepan. Warm it up over medium heat until it begins to gently simmer. Give it a quick stir and then take it off the heat.
Let the honey and chilli mix sit for 10-15 minutes so that they can infuse. Then taste and adjust if you want a deeper kick or a more ‘mellow’ heat level. You can decide to let it infuse for longer for more kick or even add more chilli flakes to the mix. if it’s too spicy for you, just add some plain honey to help mellow the taste.
Strain the honey through a fine sieve into a clean jar. Then stir in the apple cider vinegar. Use straight away or store your hot honey at room temperature for up to three months (if using red pepper flakes) or up to a week in the refrigerator if using fresh chilli peppers!

Can I leave the chilli peppers in the jar?
You absolutely can! The only reason you strain them is to have control over the level of heat in the honey, but if you want something that develops even more of a kick, leave them in and be ready to be amazed!
What to put hot honey on?
It’s all nice and fun, but where do you actually use this homemade hot honey, you might ask? Well, the world is your oyster, and I mean it for real. You can use this hot honey recipe on anything like:
- pizza: drizzle it over a slice, whether you go for a classic like margherita or a cheesy pizza, the hot honey would complement it well! And actually thinking of it it would be perfect on these air fryer pizza roll ups too;
- fried food: imagine hot honey fried chicken (could work well on these wings) or fried fish. I am thinking this would be a great combo with fish and chips;
- roasted vegetables: now think anything like a tray of roast veggies, from sweet potato to pumpkin, brussel sprouts and potatoes, this is what dreams are made of;
- roasted meat or fish: whether you drizzle it over roasted salmon or roasted chicken, this hot honey can really make a nice glaze;
- salad dressing: perfect to add to your favoruite dressing or inagreitte;
- ice cream: okay, this seems very far-fetched, but if you think about a sweet ice cream, like lavender, strawberry sorbet or even just a simple vanilla ice cream, it could really give it a kick;
- cookies & biscuits: swicy is a trend this year, so why not use a drizzle of this hot honey sauce on a cookie? I think a classic chocolate chip, sugar cookie or even on cookie dough;
- charcuterie & cheese boards: this would be great with brie, goat cheese or even a sharp cheddar, use it as a dipper for your crackers or even drizzled on sliced cured meat. It could also work on grilled halloumi or feta.
- sandwiches: this hot honey could add a bit of a kick to the filling or even be drizzled on top after toasting it;
- avocado toast: a drizzle transforms it from simple to a special breakfast;
- eggs: try over fried or scrambled eggs for a sweet heat contrast.
- pancakes or waffles: swap maple for something with a kick;
- popcorn: a sweet-spicy snack moment with a pinch of salt;
- tofu or grain bowls: it ties everything together with sweet heat.
