What ingredients do I need to make this Baileys eggnog?

Very basic ingredients are required for this Baileys eggnog, so let’s see them together:

  • Egg: Eggnog’s rich and creamy base is derived from egg yolks. The yolks add a velvety texture and a luscious, custard-like flavour to the drink. When it comes to making your own eggnog, using fresh, high-quality eggs is essential. The egg yolks are whisked with white sugar, creating a sweet and smooth foundation for the drink. This classic combination is the canvas upon which the other ingredients work their magic;
  • White sugar: White sugar is the sweetener of choice for eggnog, providing the necessary sweetness to balance the rich, savoury flavours of egg yolks. It’s not only about sweetness, though; the sugar helps to create a smooth and silky texture in your eggnog. The sweetness of the sugar is essential to offset the warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg;
  • Milk: Milk is the liquid component that gives eggnog its characteristic creamy quality. Whole milk is the traditional choice, but you can customize your eggnog by using different types of milk, like 2%, skim, or even a dairy-free alternative. The milk dilutes the richness of the egg yolks, making the drink more sippable and palatable;
  • Vanilla paste: Vanilla paste, derived from vanilla beans, adds a depth of flavour and aromatic complexity to your Baileys eggnog. It enhances the sweetness while providing a subtle but distinct vanilla aroma. The tiny black specks of vanilla in your eggnog give it a gourmet touch, and it pairs harmoniously with the warm spices in the mix;
  • Cinnamon & Nutmeg: Cinnamon and nutmeg are the spices that transform ordinary eggnog into a seasonal delight. Cinnamon imparts a sweet, slightly spicy note, while nutmeg offers a nutty, warm flavour with a hint of earthiness. The combination of these spices awakens the senses and invokes the feeling of cosiness and nostalgia;
  • Baileys: And now, the star of the show, Baileys Irish Cream. Baileys is a luxurious, original Irish cream liqueur made from Irish whiskey, dairy cream, and cocoa. When added to eggnog, it brings a whole new dimension of flavour. The creamy richness of Baileys perfectly complements the egg yolks and milk, creating a smooth and velvety texture. Furthermore, the hint of whiskey in Baileys blends seamlessly with the nutmeg and cinnamon, enhancing the drink’s overall complexity.

Baileys adds a touch of indulgence to your eggnog, making it a truly special holiday treat. Whether you prefer a classic eggnog recipe or like to experiment with different variations, adding Baileys is a fantastic way to elevate the flavours and create a delightful, adult-friendly twist on a traditional favourite.

How Do I make this Baileys Eggnog?

Making an eggnog, even a Baileys eggnog, it’s pretty easy. Let’s see how we can put it together now.

Step 1: Prepare Your Glass

Before you start mixing your cocktail, you’ll want to create a festive atmosphere with your glass. Here’s how:

  • Take a small plate and pour a bit of brown sugar onto it;
  • Pour some milk into a separate bowl and then dip the rim of your glass;
  • Gently press the moistened rim of the glass into the brown sugar to create a sugared rim.

This simple step adds a touch of sweetness and sparkle to your cocktail presentation.

Step 2: Mix the Base

Now, let’s get to the heart of the recipe:

  • In a small bowl, beat the egg yolk and white sugar until they are light and fluffy and the sugar has completely dissolved in the yolk;
  • Grab your cocktail shaker and add the yolk and sugar mixture, the milk, the Baileys and the vanilla paste;
  • Add a pinch of ground nutmeg and a pinch of ground cinnamon to the mixture.

Step 3: Shake It Up

  • Fill your shaker or glass with ice;
  • Put the lid on your shaker or use a spoon to stir the mixture until it’s well combined and chilled.

Step 4: Pour and Garnish

  • Strain your mixture into your prepared glass;
  • Grate a bit of fresh nutmeg on top of the drink and a dust of cinnamon for a touch of elegance and flavour;
  • Finally, add a cinnamon stick for garnish, and your Baileys Eggnog is ready to impress!

Tips for the Perfect Baileys Eggnog Cocktail

Creating the perfect Baileys Eggnog Cocktail is an art, and every artist needs some tips to achieve perfection. Here are some handy tips to ensure your holiday drink is a hit:

  • Use Fresh Eggnog: The freshness of your eggnog is crucial. Opt for high-quality, fresh eggnog for the best results;
  • Choose the Right Glass: Presentation matters, so select a glass that showcases your cocktail’s festive look;
  • Don’t Overdo It: While the addition of Irish whiskey can be delightful, be mindful of the quantity. You want to enhance the flavour, not overpower it;
  • Grate Fresh Nutmeg: Whenever possible, grate fresh nutmeg. The aroma and flavour are incomparable to pre-ground nutmeg;
  • Customize to Your Taste: Feel free to adjust the ingredients to suit your personal preferences. Whether you like it sweeter, spicier, or boozier, make it your own;
  • Serve Chilled: Make sure your cocktail is well-chilled. This enhances the creamy texture and the overall experience.

Baileys Eggnog Variations

While the classic Baileys Eggnog Cocktail is a winner, there are plenty of ways to get creative with this holiday treat. Here are a few variations to consider:

  • Chocolate Lover’s Twist: Add a drizzle of chocolate syrup to your cocktail for a delightful chocolatey kick;
  • Spice It Up: Experiment with different spices like cloves or allspice to give your drink a unique twist;
  • Non-Alcoholic Version: Omit the Irish whiskey for a kid-friendly, non-alcoholic version that everyone can enjoy;
  • Frozen Baileys Eggnog: Blend your ingredients with ice for a chilled, frozen treat;
  • Caramel Cinnamon Delight: Drizzle some caramel syrup over the whipped cream and sprinkle a little extra cinnamon for an extra layer of flavour.

I will admit that eggnog and Baileys are not drinks I have ever liked … but … this recipe does sound really, really good and I would be interested to try this version as I think it is much better than the concoctions that I’ve had in the past. Another really great seasonal idea from you guys—I always love seeing what you share here!
