What is mistletoe and why do you kiss under it?
Mistletoe, with its distinctive green leaves and white berries, has long been associated with festive traditions, particularly during the holiday season. The practice of kissing under the mistletoe has roots in ancient folklore and customs, and it has evolved over the centuries into a popular and playful tradition.
Mistletoe is a parasitic plant that grows on various trees, such as apple, oak, and pine. There are different species of mistletoe, but the one commonly associated with holiday traditions is the European mistletoe –Viscum album. It is characterized by its evergreen leaves and white berries, creating a distinctive and visually appealing appearance, especially in the winter when the host trees may have shed their leaves.
Historical Significance: A Symbol of Fertility and Life
The tradition of using mistletoe in celebrations dates back to ancient times, with roots in Norse, Greek, and Celtic mythology. In Norse mythology, mistletoe was associated with Frigg, the goddess of love and fertility. The story goes that when her son, Baldur, was killed with an arrow made of mistletoe, Frigg’s tears turned the red berries white. Over time, mistletoe became a symbol of love, fertility, and life.
The ancient Celts considered mistletoe sacred, believing it held mystical properties. Druids, the Celtic religious leaders, would conduct elaborate rituals involving mistletoe, often cutting it with a golden sickle during the winter solstice. Mistletoe was seen as a symbol of healing and protection, and its presence was thought to bring good fortune.

Evolution of the Kissing Tradition
The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe is believed to have originated in England during the 18th century. As the custom evolved, a berry would be plucked from the mistletoe each time a kiss was exchanged. Once all the berries were gone, the kissing tradition for that bunch of mistletoe would end.
The association between mistletoe and kissing has endured through the centuries and has become a lighthearted and festive part of Christmas celebrations in many cultures. In modern times, mistletoe is often hung in doorways or ceilings during the holiday season, inviting couples to share a kiss beneath its branches.
The act of kissing under the mistletoe is often seen as a symbol of goodwill, love, and friendship. It adds a playful and romantic element to holiday festivities, creating memorable moments for friends, family, and couples alike. The tradition has found its way into popular culture, from holiday movies to festive decorations, further cementing the association between mistletoe and the spirit of togetherness.
